Paver base is a form of aggregate used in the construction of patios and walkways whose topmost layer consists of mortarless or “dry-laid” paver bricks. Using a paver base ensures that your walkway or patio area has a strong foundation before the paver bricks go down. Without this strong foundation, the paver bricks run the risk of not going down evenly, resulting in undulating surfaces that can lead to cracked or uneven pavers that are difficult to walk on.

How much paver base will I need? While there is no hard-and-fast rule on the depth of your paver base, recommendations vary by use. Generally, paver base used for pedestrian walkways can be 4-6 inches deep. However, if you're expecting heaver traffic (for example, in a driveway with vehicle traffic), paver base can be 8-12 inches. Local soil conditions also impact depth needs.
